Cost Analysis of Megawatt Charging and Overnight Charging for Battery Long-Haul Trucks

Publikation

The timely installation and economical operation of public charging infrastructure along the main transport routes is of paramount importance for the market rollout of battery long-haul trucks. It is of the utmost urgency that the installation and operation of charging infrastructure for megawatt systems and overnight charging for battery long-haul trucks be realised at acceptable costs. In order to provide planners and operators of charging infrastructure with a better understanding of the costs and possible effects, a total cost of ownership for public charging infrastructure has been developed. The model analyses the correlations between charging infrastructure and grid connection costs as well as charging demand and service quality based on location-specific utilisation in order to demonstrate the effects on the resulting charging price. The economic analysis indicates that high utilisation rates are necessary, particularly for the Megawatt Charging System, in order to achieve low charging prices. However, only low site utilisation rates can be expected in the initial phase due to a lack of market penetration.
